The Thai ethnic group will hold their first-ever cultural festival in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau from December 27-29. Themed “Preservation and upholding of the Thai ethnic group’s cultural identity in the new period of international integration and national development,” the cultural festival sees the participation of other seven provinces, including Dien Bien, Hoa Binh, Son La, Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Thanh Hoa, Nghe An.

The upcoming event is expected not only to foster the solidarity among the Thai ethnic people but also to contribute to preserving and upholding traditional cultural heritage of ethnic minority groups. It is also an opportunity to advertize local tourism potentials to tourists.

During the festival, a series of activities will take place, such as a show of the Thai ethnic group’s traditional costumes; performances of traditional festivals, rituals and cultural practices; displays of cultural and tourist products; and folk dances. Additionally, an exhibition showcasing photos, objects, musical instruments, and ancient books of the Thai people will be on display.

Furthermore, visitors coming to the festival will have chance to contemplate many documents, publications and pictures on the daily life and traditional craft villages of the Thai ethnic group, as well as to take part in a wide range of sporting events, including stick pushing, ‘Con’ (cloth ball) throwing, ‘to ma le’ (throwing seeds of ‘ma le’ fruit), and crossbow shooting.

Viet Nam Television Channels 2&5 will broadcast live the opening of the festival on December 27 and 5 while the closing ceremony will be aired live on December 28 on Lai Chau provincial Television.
